About this role:

The Project Manager is a very important role at Echo&Co. They are a project lead and champion — using wit, wisdom, empathy, creativity, and innovation to lead meaningful and rewarding client engagements. The Project Manager is a passionate, driven leader who can confidently shape project strategies and lead teams and contribute to building an effective and profitable project management practice at Echo&Co. 

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to be an independent self-starter who is social impact-oriented, entrepreneurial, confident, and driven. You’ll need proven expertise in leading digital transformation and web/application design and implementation projects across business, strategy, creative, and technical disciplines within nonprofit organizations. You need to have an empathetic, inclusive, relationships-driven, communicative approach to project management and client engagement.

This role reports to the Director, Client Services and is based in Boston, Mass., Washington, D.C. and/or remote.

Who we’re looking for:

We are looking for a Project Manager, who will lead project teams in executing all aspects of projects, playing an important role in guiding the direction and destiny of our work with clients. You’ll balance strategy and tactical implementation for web platform, application, and digital projects from planning and discovery through to architecture, design, technical development, and continuous improvement. 

This requires:

  • Interest in work that promotes change, embraces innovation, and runs on teamwork. 

  • Direct experience in strategic website and web application consulting within nonprofits and/or government agencies, using project management best practices (PMBOK) and efficiencies across planning, strategy, design, and technical development. 

  • Expertise in project design and planning, project financial planning and reporting, business requirements analysis and definition, product development, and stakeholder engagement and management.

  • Understanding business, creative, and technical requirements and aligning them with project scope and expectations, foreseeing challenges and being proactive to mitigate project risks.

  • A rigorous focus on developing project standards, performance metrics, ground rules, roles (RASCI, MOCHA modeling), communication guidelines, and performance criteria in order to ensure high-quality delivery on time and within scope.

  • Experience using SEO and analytics evaluation to develop objectives and metrics for project strategy and performance. Guiding the project team in aligning all activities and deliverables to objectives, performance metrics, and scope.

  • Talent for thinking strategically about how to meet the client’s overall business objectives and tactically about how to operationalize those requirements within project constraints.

  • Confidence in actively managing project teams, providing guidance, direction, coaching, and support.

  • Using ideation, analysis, and problem solving to identify and prioritize the right problems to solve and driving teams forward actively toward implementation. 

  • Expertise in evaluating client requests and aligning them to the strategic interests of the long-term company-client relationship as well as the current engagement. Ability to identify needs that clients may not recognize or express and ensure approaches and solutions are linked to objectives and future needs.

  • An empathetic and instructional approach to consulting, seeking opportunities to co-create solutions with clients and build a partnership of trust, candor, and peer mentoring.

  • Skill at defining project objectives and shaping project direction, defining deliverables and activities needed to achieve them, and the work breakdown structure required in order to operationally and logistically manage activities alongside dependencies and risks from project kick-off to launch.

  • Skill with leading and mentoring teams, building positive and collaborative project cultures, and helping coach teams toward high performance. This includes listening, seeking input, eliminating assumptions, managing expectations, and resolving conflict.

  • An understanding that strong, high-quality written and verbal communication is essential to client relationships and project success and a strong focus on using plain language, building context,  being concise and thorough, focusing on quality, and tailoring interactions to the client’s needs in all communication.

  • Experience leading projects across research, strategy, content, creative, and technology and a strong command of how to align many, complex details across these disciplines. 

  • Savvy use of project and resource management software such as Airtable, Jira, Basecamp, experienced in multiple Content Management Systems (CMSs), and generally very curious about and proficient with various web based technologies.

What you’ll do:

  • Collaborate with the client engagement lead (account lead) to develop overall project engagement strategy and work with discipline leads and project teams to execute on plans.

  • Develop and manage schedules, budgets, assets, and overall project organization to ensure requirements and project deliverables dates are clearly communicated, understood, executed upon, and met.

  • Develop project plans and resource plans and analyze progress against those plans on a weekly basis, ensure time tracking and billing is complete and accurate.

  • Provide active direction to the entire project team on their activities and deliverables, to ensure work is aligned to client expectations and progressing as planned. Collaborating with the engagement lead on risk tracking and mitigation strategies when necessary.

  • Contribute to developing best-in-class project management practices and leading continuous improvement with the director of client services and project management team.

  • Gather and prioritize product and client business, creative, and technical requirements. Manage the seamless translation of goals and requirements across strategy/UX, creative, and technical disciplines, managing team alignment and progress toward shared requirements and goals.

  • Establish plans for project scope and work breakdown structure, critical path and baseline structures, project communication, reconciliation and forecasting, risk analysis and mitigation, quality assurance, and closure.

  • Lead quality assurance and user acceptance planning and testing, including creating and executing test scripts to test product features and identify defects.

  • Document user procedures and lead client training on technology platforms as needed. Support them in their content planning, production, input, and QA efforts.

  • Development of business requirements documents, work plans, and other strategic documents to articulate the business, user, functional, and technical requirements for client engagements.

  • Remain current on emerging technologies and useful tools for our clients and serve as a key administrator of systems used to support implementation, such as Jira.

  • Support business development with current and prospective clients, leading: initial intake conversations and developing engagement approaches; developing scopes and estimates; drafting approach summaries, proposals, and contracts; and guiding contracts through negotiation to signature.

Experience you’ll need:

  • 5+ years of web, digital, and/or interactive project management experience across business, creative, and technical disciplines; mix of interactive agency and client side environments preferred.

  • Significant experience in the development of large-scale digital solutions utilizing Agile methodologies such as SCRUM, Kanban, etc., and waterfall methodologies.

  • Knowledge of Drupal, Wordpress, and open-source technologies.

  • Knowledge of integration of open-source technologies with CRM and eCRM platforms such as Salesforce, Everyaction, NVP-VAN, etc.

  • Experience leading project budgets greater than $300k and multi-discipline teams of at least 3-5 resources including content strategists, information architects, user experience architects, business analysts, visual and interaction designers, developers, and QA specialists.

  • Past experience negotiating and writing contracts and statements of work for time and materials and fixed price projects.

  • Deep understanding of project strategy, economics, and operations, including expertise in financial processes and requirements and cost analysis and reconciliation.

  • Knowledge of and experience with resource management.

  • Expertise with JIRA, Smartsheet, Basecamp, 10,000ft, and/or other similar project and resource management tools.

  • Thorough understanding of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and evidence of applying important principles to effective design and management of projects is essential.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage complex projects and multiple resources. 

  • Understanding of web-based technology and development processes. 

  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally for job-related activities.

Bonus points for:

  • PMP and other project management qualifications/certifications beneficial but not essential.

  • Previous experience and/or work with nonprofit and progressive organizations and a commitment to supporting social causes through digital technology.

  • Having a professional approach based in human-centered design thinking and systems thinking.

  • A relationship-based approach to collaboration, leading with listening, compassion, humor, and respect.

  • Interest in cycling, video games, home brewing, music, art, the outdoors, and other assorted nerdiness.

  • Multilingual a plus.
