The Frontend Designer is a talented designer and frontend developer who loves helping social sector organizations — nonprofits, foundations, museums, universities, social ventures — develop technologies that strengthen their relationships with constituents, increase their own digital literacy and sophistication, and attract new activists, donors, and supporters.

This position is responsible for extending and translating static designs into production-ready HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. In close collaboration with the client services, UX, and development teams, the Frontend Designer will build holistic design systems in the form of an in-browser style guide or pattern library. The Frontend Designer needs a strong eye for design, expert knowledge in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and a passion for continually improving the design and code processes at Echo&Co. This position reports to the Design Director and is located in New Orleans, Boston, Washington, D.C., or New York. Remote work options available, with some travel required.

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Design and code in-browser design systems in the form of a pattern library.

  • Design and code responsive, accessible and maintainable HTML/CSS/JS prototypes.

  • Create design deliverables that align with client needs, are delivered on-time, and are of the highest quality.

  • Collaborate with client services, design, user experience, and technology leads to define and manage project scope, ensuring successful execution of design and front-end work.

  • Be a thought leader in the field of design systems and pattern libraries, especially as it applies to nonprofit, philanthropy, government, and social ventures.

Technical knowledge and professional experience you’ll need:

  • Degree and/or certification (or equivalent) in graphic design, web design, computer science, or a related field.

  • 2+ years experience creating digital brand experiences and web design products.

  • 2+ years experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

  • A strong portfolio of creative work for digital channels: desktop and mobile web, applications, email, and social media.

  • Experience producing clean, reusable, semantic and mobile-optimized frontend code.

  • Experience making in-browser style guides and pattern libraries with tools like Pattern Lab.

  • Experience with varying CSS methodologies and front-end frameworks such as OOCSS, SMACSS, Atomic CSS, Twitter Bootstrap, Zurb Foundation, etc.

  • Experience using build tools such as Webpack, Gulp, or Grunt.

  • The ability to produce front-end design and code that holds up under various design constraints: different browsers, different dimensions, different resolutions, and different interaction methods (mouse, keyboard, gestures, screen readers).

  • Ability to rapidly diagnose and resolve front-end code issues.

  • Self-starter with strong self-management skills.

  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.

  • Team player who loves to collaborate.

Nice to have Technical knowledge and professional experience:

  • Familiarity in PHP-based open source CMS platforms (Drupal, Wordpress) and an understanding of their integration with common nonprofit and e-commerce web technologies, such as: Salesforce, Blackbaud, Luminate, Tessitura/TNEW, EveryAction, ActionKit, third-party web marketing tools, social media platforms, etc.

  • Experience with modern javascript frameworks such as Vue, React, or Angular.

  • An inspired passion for, and understanding of, new and emerging tools, technology, and practices on the web.

  • An understanding of user experience best practices.

  • A strong grasp of web design: typography, color theory, grid systems and layout, etc.

  • Experience assisting technical teams in translating design concepts into technical and functional specifications.

  • Familiarity with major creative and user experience design tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, OmniGraffle, and Axure.
